Prune at the Right Time
In the Houston area, the best time to prune most trees is late fall through early spring when trees are dormant. Pruning during dormancy reduces stress on the tree and minimizes the risk of pest and disease issues. However, dead or hazardous branches should be removed any time of year.
Water Deeply, Not Frequently
Established trees benefit from deep, infrequent watering rather than shallow daily watering. Water slowly at the drip line (the outer edge of the canopy) to encourage deep root growth. During Houston's hot summers, newly planted trees may need watering 2–3 times per week.
Mulch Around Your Trees
Apply 2–4 inches of organic mulch in a ring around your tree, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk. Mulch retains moisture, regulates soil temperature, and reduces competition from grass and weeds. Avoid "volcano mulching" — piling mulch against the trunk can cause rot.
Watch for Signs of Stress
Early signs of tree stress include yellowing leaves, early leaf drop, sparse canopy, and unusual bark discoloration. Catching problems early gives you more options for treatment. If you notice anything unusual, have a certified arborist take a look before the issue worsens.
Know Houston's Common Tree Threats
Houston trees face threats from oak wilt, hypoxylon canker, emerald ash borer, and various fungal diseases. Regular inspections by a certified arborist can catch these issues early. Avoid wounding trees unnecessarily, as wounds are common entry points for disease.
Prepare Your Trees for Hurricane Season
Before hurricane season (June–November), have your trees inspected and pruned to remove dead or weak branches. Proper crown thinning reduces wind resistance and lowers the risk of storm damage. A well-maintained tree is far less likely to fail in high winds.
